AEM Fellowship: What to Expect in Your First Year

By Dr. James NakamuraMarch 29, 2026

Year One at a Glance

The first year of AEM fellowship is designed to build a strong clinical foundation. Fellows rotate through core services including cardiac rehabilitation, sports cardiology, exercise physiology labs, and outpatient exercise medicine clinics.

Clinical Expectations

  • Minimum 200 supervised CPET interpretations
  • Exercise prescription for 50+ complex patients
  • 12 weeks of cardiac rehab co-management
  • Weekly fellow journal club presentations
  • One research project with faculty mentor

The fellows who thrive are those who see every patient encounter as a chance to understand the physiology more deeply.
